After 40, the body sends new signals: a bit more stiffness in the morning, slower recovery, hormonal changes, sometimes aches that weren’t there before. This is exactly the right time to discover Reformer Pilates. Gentle on the joints but demanding for the muscles, it helps you stay strong, mobile and comfortable in your own skin in every decade.
Preserving muscle mass
From your forties onward, muscle mass naturally decreases if it isn’t used. Yet strong muscles protect the joints, support metabolism and make every daily movement easier. Reformer Pilates is progressive resistance training: the springs make it possible to strengthen the whole body in depth, without heavy weights or impact.
Protecting your bones
Resistance training is recognized for helping maintain bone health, an important issue for women, especially around menopause. Reformer Pilates, by working the muscles against resistance, fits into this approach. With osteoporosis or osteopenia, however, some movements need to be adapted: talk to your doctor and let your instructor know.
Improving balance
Balance declines with age if it isn’t trained. Reformer Pilates stability exercises, often performed on a moving carriage, develop coordination, proprioception and the strength of the stabilizers in the ankles, knees and hips. Better balance means more confidence in every movement.
Maintaining mobility
Stiff hips, less flexible shoulders, a tight back: mobility is lost when it isn’t maintained. Reformer Pilates combines strengthening and stretching in every session to keep the joints mobile and the body light.
Going through perimenopause and menopause more serenely
Hormonal changes can come with fatigue, stress, sleep problems or changes in body shape. Reformer Pilates helps strengthen the core, maintain tone and, through conscious breathing, calm the nervous system. Many women find it a precious anchor during this transition.
A workout that respects the body
Unlike some high-intensity workouts, Reformer Pilates doesn’t punish the joints. Movements are controlled, adaptable and progressive. It’s a workout you can practice for decades, making it a true long-term investment in your health.
Starting with confidence
If you haven’t been physically active for a long time or have a specific condition, a few private Reformer Pilates classes are an excellent way to start. Your instructor can adapt every exercise and give you solid foundations before you join a small group. Also check our FAQ for practical questions.
What frequency after 40?
Two sessions a week are an excellent starting point: enough to progress in strength and mobility while giving the body time to recover. With experience, you can add a third session. Ideally, complete your routine with walking or another activity you enjoy, and give sleep and recovery an important place.
