The 8 most common beginner mistakes in Reformer Pilates

Every beginner makes mistakes, and that’s perfectly normal: it’s how we learn. But knowing the most common pitfalls will help you progress faster, avoid discomfort and fully enjoy every Reformer Pilates class. Here are the eight mistakes our instructors correct most often.

1. Going too fast

Pilates isn’t a race. Fast movements use momentum instead of muscles, which reduces effectiveness and increases the risk of losing control of the carriage. Slow down: every phase of the movement, out and back, counts.

2. Holding your breath

Under effort, we tend to hold our breath. Yet breathing activates the core and helps you stay relaxed. Remember this simple cue: exhale during the main effort. To learn more, read our article on your first Reformer Pilates class, which also explains how a session unfolds.

3. Straining with the neck and shoulders

Many beginners lift their shoulders toward their ears or pull on their neck during abdominal exercises. The work must come from the core. Think about lengthening the neck and keeping the shoulders low and wide.

4. Forgetting to engage the core

Without core engagement, the lower back compensates and the movement loses its effectiveness. Keep a gentle, continuous engagement of the deep abdominals, as if drawing your navel slightly toward your spine.

5. Choosing resistance that’s too heavy

We often think more springs means a better workout. In reality, resistance that’s too heavy leads you to compensate with other muscles. And for some exercises, lighter resistance is even harder, because it demands more control. Trust your instructor’s recommendations.

6. Comparing yourself to others

Every body has its own history, flexibility and strength. Watching your neighbour to copy her range can lead you to push beyond your limits. Focus on your own sensations and your progress.

7. Neglecting foot and knee alignment

On the footbar, the knees should follow the line of the feet. Letting them fall inward or outward can create strain. Your instructor will show you the different foot positions and how to align them.

8. Not daring to ask questions

Don’t understand a cue? Feeling discomfort? Say so! Your instructor is there to guide you. There’s never a silly question, especially when you’re starting out.

The shortcut: a few private classes

If you want to avoid these mistakes from the start, a few private Reformer Pilates classes are an excellent investment. One-on-one, your instructor corrects every detail and gives you solid foundations that you can then apply in group classes.

Bonus: forgetting to have fun

Pilates requires concentration, but it shouldn’t become a source of pressure. Some beginners are so focused on perfection that they forget to enjoy the moment. Welcome small slip-ups with a smile, laugh when an exercise surprises you and appreciate your progress. A joyful practice is a practice that lasts.

What really matters

In the end, the biggest mistake would be giving up too soon. The first sessions require some adjustment, then everything becomes more natural. Be patient, consistent and kind to yourself. For practical questions about clothing, booking or cancellation, check our FAQ.
