A first Reformer Pilates class can feel intimidating: an unfamiliar machine, new vocabulary, a group you don’t know yet. Rest assured, everything is designed so that your first experience is pleasant and accessible. Here is, step by step, what awaits you at BLVD Pilates.
Before class: booking and getting ready
Everything starts with online booking. Choose your date and time on our booking page, then watch your inbox for the confirmation. If it’s your very first time, our introductory offers are ideal to discover Reformer Pilates in Laval at a low price.
As for clothing, choose fitted, comfortable pieces and bring grip socks and a water bottle. We wrote a complete article on what to wear to a Pilates class to help you.
Arriving at the studio
We suggest arriving a few minutes before the session starts. You’ll have time to settle in, discover the studio and meet your instructor. It’s the perfect moment to mention an injury, a specific condition or simply that it’s your first class. She will adapt the exercises accordingly.
Discovering the Reformer
Your instructor introduces the machine: the sliding carriage, the footbar, the straps and the springs that set the resistance. She explains how to get on and off the Reformer safely and how to change springs. Don’t worry if everything isn’t clear right away: you will be guided throughout the session.
How the session unfolds
A typical class follows a logical progression:
- a warm-up focused on breathing and spinal mobility;
- leg work on the footbar, often called footwork;
- exercises for the arms, back and shoulders with the straps;
- movements for the core, abs and stability;
- a cool-down with stretches to release the body.
Movements are slow and controlled. The goal is not to go fast but to do it well. Your instructor moves around the room, corrects your position and offers easier or harder variations depending on how you feel.
What you will feel
Many beginners are surprised: the movements look simple, but the deep muscles work intensely. It’s normal to feel your abs, glutes or thighs shake slightly. After class, most women describe a feeling of lightness, length and calm. Mild muscle fatigue the next day is completely normal.
The little details that make a difference
A few simple habits will make your first session even more enjoyable. Eat lightly one to two hours before class, stay well hydrated and avoid jewelry that could catch on the straps. During the session, never hesitate to ask questions or request a gentler variation: your instructor is there for you. And above all, don’t compare yourself to the other participants. Every body is different, and Reformer Pilates is practiced at your own pace.
After your first class
To progress, consistency is essential. Two to three sessions a week will help you quickly master the basics and feel concrete changes. If you have questions about what comes next, our FAQ answers the most common ones, and our team is available through the Contact page.
Your first Reformer Pilates class is just the beginning. At BLVD Pilates, we can’t wait to welcome you into our community in the heart of Laval.
