What to wear to a Reformer Pilates class?

You’ve booked your first Reformer Pilates class and are wondering what to pack? The right outfit makes a real difference: it lets you move freely, stay safe on the machine and helps your instructor see your alignment. Here is our complete guide.

The basic principle: fitted and comfortable

In Reformer Pilates, loose clothing is not your friend. A baggy t-shirt can slide toward your face during lying exercises, and loose pants can get caught in the springs or the carriage. Choose fitted, stretchy and breathable clothing that follows each of your movements.

Another advantage: close-fitting clothes let your instructor see the position of your pelvis, spine and knees, and therefore correct you better.

Bottoms: leggings or bike shorts

High-waisted leggings are the most popular choice. They stay in place during movements and offer good support. Long bike shorts also work very well. Avoid shorts that are too short or too loose, which are impractical during legs-in-the-air exercises.

Top: a tank or a fitted t-shirt

Opt for a tank top, a fitted t-shirt or a sports bra with a top over it. Several exercises are done on your back or upside down: a top that stays in place will save you from constantly readjusting.

Grip socks: essential

Reformer Pilates is practiced barefoot or in socks, never in sneakers. Grip socks, with small silicone patterns on the sole, offer better traction on the footbar and the carriage. They are recommended for your stability, your safety and equipment hygiene. Keep a pair in your gym bag.

The little details that matter

  • Hair: tie it so you can lie down comfortably. Avoid very high buns that get in the way during exercises on your back.
  • Jewelry: remove rings, bracelets and long chains that could catch on the straps or damage the machine.
  • Zippers: avoid them on the back of clothing, as they become uncomfortable when lying down.
  • Perfume: keep it light, out of respect for other participants in a shared space.

What to put in your bag?

  • A water bottle.
  • Your grip socks.
  • A small towel, if you wish.
  • A warm top for after class.

All Reformer Pilates equipment is provided at the studio: you don’t need any props.

And in winter?

In Laval, winters are long and cold. Arrive at the studio in layers that are easy to remove: a warm sweater, a coat and boots you can leave at the entrance. Also keep a pair of clean, dry socks in your bag, since damp socks slip more on the machine. After class, put a warm layer back on to keep your muscles warm on the way home.

Do you need designer activewear?

Absolutely not. What matters is your comfort and freedom of movement. That said, many clients love wearing an outfit that makes them feel good: feeling beautiful and at ease is also part of the experience. At BLVD Pilates, elegance is part of our world, but the only rule is to feel good in your own skin.
